I generally enjoy all anime songs but what I enjoy more are those anime songs that have a vibe similar to that of western music.
Personally I consider typical anime songs to have one or any combination of the following tones: optimistic, childish, adventurous, cheering, mischievous. This is understandable as most animes depict stories of ‘ideal’ worlds or non-existent universes with supernatural beings and/or powers.
I feel like western songs are more realistic. They sing around something that is experienced by almost everyone. They have a tone that could be incorporated as background music to certain life situations without feeling out of place. Maybe it is pretty obvious since they are not created for animated forms of media, but are different nonetheless.
I am in search for songs that have the best of both worlds. Songs from anime openings or endings (maybe even from the OST) which have a more realistic or ‘cinematic’ vibe like that of western music.
Some examples I could provide to get you the general of what I am talking about are:
- All ‘Attack on Titan’ openings except ‘Red Swan’
- Akuma no Ko (Attack on Titan Ed7)
- Mukanjyo (Vinland Saga Op1)
- CHAINSAW BLOOD (Chainsaw Man Ed1)
- First Death (Chainsaw Man Ed7)
- VIOLENCE (Chainsaw Man Ed11)
- Hydra (Overlord Ed2)
- Silent Solitude (Overlord Ed3)
- VORACITY (Overlord Op3)
- Vivid Vice (Jujustu Kaisen Op2)
Few disclaimers:
- I am not a big anime fan, so it’s reasonable that my examples are pretty limited.
- No, I don’t love rock to have majority of the above songs in that genre. I like songs by One Direction and Taylor Swift too, but I could not find an equivalent song from any anime I watched so far.
- I won’t consider what the lyrics say. They may be in Japanese or English or both and may have a completely opposite theme to the song, but the song itself is what I am looking for.
The Pillows namely for their work on FLCL but they’ve done other anime too.
I will always recommend ZUTOMAYO. They aren’t really an anime band - the only one I’m aware of is an ending in chainsaw man, but in terms of just general music they are probably my favorite band in any language
Some of nano’s work might be worth a browse:
- Bullseye – OP for Hidan no Aria AA
- Savior of Song - from Arpeggio of Blue Steel -Ars Nova-
Other random choices:
- Hey Kids - Noragami Aragoto OP
Although to my ear you like JP rock/pop. Nothing wrong with that really – regional differences exist even within the same overall genre of music.
Vinland Saga openings maybe. I recall them sounding like metal
The only anime song I’ve added to my collection is from Angel Beats I just really loved the intro music.
I suspect if you searched “girls dead monster - my soul your beats” on YouTube it would be there.
Check out the Asobi Asobase ending theme
Not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but these seem not particularly Japanese to me.

You beat me to the music for Bebop Big O and hellsing. I would go back a decade or two and use “Blood on the Moon” from the “City Hunter” anime soundtrack (wicked smooth jazz instrumental which screams 80’s)
I heard one the other day that sounded exactly like an American pop song and it was throwing me off because they were singing in Japanese so it was like the same kinda weird disconnect you might feel listening to a Sim in The Sims talking their gibberish language but still sounding almost real.
It was just in a short ass tiktok thing I spent like 30 seconds on so I don’t know what it was called and didn’t save it. 🤷🏻♂️
Check out The Seatbelts, who did all of the music for Cowboy Bebop (which, ironically enough, was an anime as a result of the band, not the other way around, IIRC)
