Pyrosis did a great job answering a lot of your questions, I will focus again on why I cannot recommend plex:

Opt-In is not acceptable. You need to opt-out of: data sharing, data sharing with partners (unless you are in the UK or specific States), sharing playback data, stopping discovery together and activity feed, and turning off all of their live tv and streaming services.

Sharing streaming habits with others is not something that ever should have been opt-out. They keep pushing the line.

By the way, several of the “features” you mention are not included by default. Hardware decoding, downloads, DVR, etc.

I run both concurrently. I have a plex pass from way back when, maybe a decade or more.

What plex is now is not what it once was. Trying to socialize viewing habits, opting in by default to analysis, ads, reviews, and sharing that info has gone too far. Plex also works on these features such as discovery which benefits them, instead of open bugs.

That us why I can’t recommend it.

As for a feature comparison. Jellyfin is snappier, and faster. Plex is more detailed in their interface, and has better Metadata. Jellyfin sometimes doesn’t restart where I left off. Jellyfin is much, much better on mobile devices, but has less clients for tv’s. Jellyfin doesn’t rely on any server but my own, where plex wants to authenticate with thier own servers and ask for accounts (and money) to have full functionality. Jellyfin always downloads to a client. Plex…might. Plex has better handling of multiple streams in one file.

Because they are doing things in their best interest and not the end user.

I can see that’s the difference. I never went to /r/all. I picked things I was interested in and if they were good subs I joined them. To each thier own I guess.

I have been on Reddit for a few more years than you but never blocked anyone. Why not scroll past and move on? I find it weird to block or mute. On the other hand seems perfectly reasonable to curate your view to places you enjoy visiting. I don’t bother (usually) seeing anything outside of what I am subscribed to.

And that is the reason I don’t block anyone: they often are not in a place I visit OR they happen to be rational and interesting when it is not the crazy thing I might consider blocking them for.

But I understand your experience may be different than mine.

In this day and age they should expect you to bring your own device. But they should also not expect you to install any of their software on your device. You simply remote to their machine. They keep it locked down, you get to use your own equipment for all the things you like (music, your personal email, internet, etc).

Or your tasks should be set up so you can do your work using a web browser (in a container - thanks Firefox) and call it a day.

I use Linux for everything and just remote into the works computers to do theirs. I am happy with that. When I went to another country recently I only brought a Steam Deck and was able to do all the work I needed to do.

As long as it isn’t my computer, I don’t care.

I remote to all our windows machines from my Linux box which is fine with me. They can lock down their computer, I am just supposed to use what they give me. They pay me, they put the malware on their own machines, so… whatever.

This is their choice not to configure it correctly. You can set up Azure RDP and use Remmina as a front end to FreeRDP or just FreeRDP by itself.

Also why are they using a browser “client”? That is also an odd configuration. You don’t need a special client. I use Firefox on Linux (with a container - love those) to connect to the Azure Desktops.

I do all my windows work from a Linux machine. Recently I traveled to another country and did all my clients Windows (Azure remote desktops) work from a Steam Deck (Arch linux), lol.

Nice to know it is a pleasant disagreement. But seriously, this is not social media.

I am still active in several forums. They are great and have even more of a sense of community them they used to. People talk about the subject and even meet in person around the world.

I also host a forum for a different group. No ads either cause fuck that shit.

I gotta say no. This is more like a collection of forums. There really is no following, no social aspect other than discussing the topic at hand. I am not promoting myself, I prefer annonymity over identifying myself. I do not think this counts as social media at all.

No order does not matter, in the first thing we did it simply is announcing that it is capable to handle requests as if it was any of those browsers/versions. This second link is more to to the point.

Still, if you are happy with it, fine. I just find it somewhat depressing/worrysome that there are basically 2 choices no matter what browser you choose: Chrome (or webkit based) and Firefox. That is it. (Well ok or Safari. KHTML based - which was a fork of KDE’s Konqueror. )

It isnt a fork though, its just built on top of. Which is probably smarter than a fork, they dont have to do all that other work. It is interesting that the web hints and the user agent now say Chrome in the vavaldi reporting. At least I think it did: search for “what is my user agent” and it will tell you.
