Yeah, I think a lot of the people who are against are the ones who don’t like the ad-removal model, because you are paying to remove ads on an app that uses a platform whose foundation is built against ads and tracking. The subscription model or one-time payment for life is fair IMO; people are free to support the dev (and please support the lemmy devs and instance admins too!). It’s the ads (and tracking that come with it) that’s kinda weird.

  • Then they bring up some common criticisms of WFH, which I’ve seen and refuted since I started working from home 2009: People can’t communicate, working in groups is harder, and people can’t control themselves. Yawn.

Exactly. I work for a global company, so the way I communicate with the people I work with everyday is via zoom. What’s the point of commuting to an office just to get on zoom anyway to talk to people?

  • This was more than a decade ago. Someone from HR mistakenly emailed a spreadsheet of all employees’ salaries to a bunch of people who aren’t authorized to see it. As part of my job, my team was tasked to track down all traces of the file on email and company workstations and remove it. Naturally I was able to see the file because of my task. I saw how low my pay was compared to my colleagues and how absurd it jumps up in just a couple of levels in rank. I and a lot of employees quit shortly after.

  • We like to sit on the end of the middle row so my wife doesn’t have to sit next to anyone else (her preference), and we can easily get up if needed without bothering anyone else. That said, it’s why we prefer cinemas with fewer seating so our viewing angle isn’t bad; unlike large theaters where end seats are too far to the side. Thankfully the IMAX in our city has the last 2 rows shorter than the rest, so seating at the end puts you close to the center; so we don’t need to sit at the very side of a huge theater.

  • You don’t seem to be getting an actual answer to your question, so I’ll try. IMO it’s the idea of being the master of your own domain and being in control; basically being an admin. If you want to be on an instance designed to your own preferences, like which instances it federates with and what communities you want to host, then the ultimate way to do it is to create and host your own instance.

  • The popular Mastodon instances seem to be more stable than the Lemmy ones though. I don’t think I’ve experienced any extended downtime on the Mastodon instances I’ve been on yet. Also, because of the race between the tons of lemmy apps being developed, they tend to have more bugs (on beta). I use Tusker beta for Mastodon and it’s been very stable compared to the Memmy and Mlem betas.

I remember a couple of years ago someone from high school (2 years ahead of me) messaged me out of the blue. I never really interacted with that person even back in high school, and their opening message was asking if I had zoom. Checked out her profile and as expected, MLM.
