  • Fair moderation. The biggest problem with the largest instances is that they are heavily skewed towards communist ideals and censorship, and mods will ban you for holding (locally) controversal opinions despite not breaking any rules. And sometimes the rules are too arbitrary and get used as a scapegoat to ban you for your opinion.

Programming.dev has been a very good example of how moderation should be done, but it is for programmers, thus may not be appealing to the typical user, and they end up on lemmy.ml instead and get banned because the mod was in a bad mood and didn’t like your opinion.

  • That’s gambling addiction, which is researched and does exist.

Gaming addiction, on the other hand, is purely speculative and often pushed by people who do not understand or like games.

While, yes, a game can have login bonuses and season passes to raise player retention, that also doesn’t become addiction, just as having a membership card with bonuses at a grocery store isn’t going to land you with a grocery addiction.

It doesn’t become gaming addiction just because the game utilizes exploitative mechanics, it becomes gambling addiction, or whatever addiction the mechanic was made to exploit. Gaming addiction in itself is as stupid of a concept as soccer addiction or book addiction.

  • Would you trust your money with a bank in China? It was only a year ago that people lost their savings and couldn’t withdraw money for food after a major bank was on the brink of bankruptcy due to the Evergrande scheme.

I guess you can call it questionable, but if I buy a VPN, I’m not going to pay with a credit card linked to my name. I use Monero. If I want to transfer money to my family in another country, crypto is faster, cheaper, and has no restrictions. I can’t even pay my student loans from my home country because my current bank blocks foreign credit card transactions, even if they are important.

This is very niche and not something an average Joe needs, but cryptocurrency isn’t for the average Joe to begin with.

  • I have two mastodon accounts that I barely use. I realized that I just don’t like twitter style social media in general. Same with pixelfed. I didn’t have accounts on the centralized alternatives to begin with. And I think that is fine. Centralized or not, social media that focuses on displaying your personal image is a scourge on humanity.

Lemmy completely replaced Reddit for me because overall the userbase on Lemmy is friendlier, and the quality of the content is better here. I reckon that once the normies flood, so will the toxic people.
