I find this very annoying for groceries. My answer would always be no. But they installed this stupid system where your shopping cart wheels will randomly lock up as you’re walking out the door and the security person has to come unlock them, and it’s a pain if you don’t have a receipt.

So now I always press yes just in case I lose cart roulette…

This is what you get when someone asks the question “how can we make the bathroom not only inaccessible to disabled people, but also a means to create more disabled people”?

This triggered a memory. When I went to university one of my flatmates bought a fancy frisbee that you could throw super far, so as a form of exercise we used to walk to a large park nearby to play.

Come spring when the weather started getting better, the park started getting busier. On one occasion it was full of kids (like 5-6 year olds?) and parents who ignored them. We tried to stay away but the kids kept getting lured by the frisbee that flies far. At some point one of my flatmates tried to hide the frisbee under his shirt to get them to leave, but one of the kids saw him do it and ran to him trying to grab it from under his shirt and yeah… as soon as my flatmate realised the kid was going to try grabbing at him at the bottom of his shirt he immediately threw the frisbee on the ground and held up his hands as if he was at gunpoint and walked away.

It was pretty funny from the outside but damn… do I hate parents who let their kids harass other people. It was a much better experience when a bad dog owner was there at a different occasion and we had a dog chasing us around for 20 mins…

It used to be an open source project, then at some point the developers moved it to closed source. In reaction to this, a couple of people forked the last open source version of emby and launched it as an open source project (again) named jellyfin.

It is still open source and under active development, and has a significant userbase. Especially on Lemmy I think it’s much preferred by people to emby (or at least more vocally supported).

While I understand the content on medium is different per author, I associate it with poor quality content. It may pop up in search results, but I actively avoid the results because of the association. Point being, the exposure you get may not be the type you want.

I think it’s already subpar with it being full of popups and prompts to register and pay for an account, but consider how companies constantly enshittfy. We trim our cats nails because when we don’t they keep getting stuck on things. They also just accept that being stuck is now their life without any complaint so sometimes it takes us hours to figure out one is now stuck to the sofa and just accepted it vs decided to sleep on the sofa.

Maybe a weird one but churches are often available to the public and they’re quiet, with seating. Might be worth to check with someone there if its OK.

If they are open to the public, museums or galleries could be a thing.

Encroaching on homeless behaviour, but if the public transportation tickets in the city are valid as long as you stay on, you could try finding a less used line and just go around in circles on something.

I try to buy all ebooks, unless they only sell on Amazon.

I have never seen contributors get anything for open source contributions.

In larger, more established projects, they explicitly make you sign an agreement that your contributions are theirs for free (in the form of a github bot that tells you this when you open a PR). Sometimes you get as much as being mentioned in a readme or changelog, but that’s pretty much it.

I’m sure there may be some examples of the opposite, I just… Wouldn’t hold my breath for it in general.

Haven’t had any experience with eweka, but this is the reason why people tend to have multiple providers from different backbones and multiple indexers - to increase your chance for completion. Weirdly, eweka does not follow DMCA, but NTD which I’ve seen regarded as slower to take down content, so in theory the experience should be better, especially on fresh content.

Your mileage will vary greatly depending on what indexers/providers you pick and unfortunately it’s very difficult to say whether it will reach your expectations until you try different options.

If you’re willing to spend some more on it, you could try just looking for a small and cheap block account from a different backbone to see if it helps with the missing articles, but there are no guarantees.

I’ve been looking for plexamp alternatives for jellyfin/emby - if you’re interested https://symfonium.app/ seems pretty cool (it costs like $5 for a lifetime purchase but has a trial). It also works with Plex.

Jellyfin is a fork of emby from the time when emby went closed source. They are very similar, emby has a similar thing to Plex pass (emby premiere) to monetize for extra features, but it’s not enshittified (yet, maybe - who knows).

I’m not sure if it’s available without premiere but it has the intro detection and skip feature, which is one of the main things I miss from jellyfin. I also prefer the app on android TV for some small reasons (over jellyfin). I’m not sure if it’s overall better, especially if you hadn’t already paid for it - I got a lifetime pass on it for cheap once.

VPNs usually route your DNS through them as well, sometimes to other DNS servers but sometimes they just send them to your original DNS server but through the VPN, kinda up to your VPN config - all of the vpn services I’ve used to date did this, although they were all reputable ones. I’d not recommend to use a questionable VPN though.

Dnssec only verifies authenticity of the server and the integrity of the data, so it helps to prevent man-in-the-middle of DNS, it doesn’t provide privacy. Look into DNS over Https (DoH) instead. It provides e2e encryption for your DNS traffic which achieves what dnssec does, but also gives you privacy. DNS over TLS (DoT) also does this, but it runs on a different port so it’s easier to block (e.g. if your isp decided they don’t like private DNS), while with DoH your DNS traffic looks the same as other web traffic - and afaik it can’t be blocked. As above, it’s likely this is not needed for use with a VPN, but I’d recommend looking into in general for use even when not on the VPN. Things like controld or nextdns can give you even more peace of mind (although read up on their policies for yourself)
