I meant the document (with a lot of pictures, tables, graphs, using a lot of different fonts, etc.) Not the file format.
I meant the document (with a lot of pictures, tables, graphs, using a lot of different fonts, etc.) Not the file format.
Idk i have never worked with a complicated odt document Although, I would expect some problems because of fonts
Come to think of it. I tried that a couple months ago and The results weren’t so great.( I told word to specifically save my docx document in ODT format)
i don’t want to start a war but sorry, office is the defacto when it comes to office work and libreoffice still have many problems with formatting and editing existing .docx files (things seem better when it comes to .xlsx and .pptx) not to mention that your documents might not look similar on both due to missing proprietary fonts.
its a good software in itself its just that its compatibility with office is a little dodgy
Dear Lord, I thought you were exaggerating
Antivirus softwere. i cant even began to describe how horribly wrong can that go
I mean who the fuck pirate that, you went out of your way to pirate a software from a shady website just to protect yourself from other files u download from other shady websites
everything and nothing
dynamic ips can be sometimes a good thing like when downloading from file hoster that have a timer limit
reboot router, refresh page, profit.
Italy: the best of 2 worlds (except Im stuck with early 2000s adsl in 2023)
haha me too

downloading is the USA.
sorry looks like i have made a mistake
point taken however Brazil in not most 3rd world countries there is also most of Africa ( with south Africa being an exception )
also even if there is high speed internet plans they are often expensive and not everyone can afford those ,and don’t count on the websites info since most of the time the speeds are just an average taking into account business and companies internet speeds not just the average costumer and mobile data plans which are **mostly certainly inevitably caped **
if you are sure that no one got in trouble for it before you probably don’t need it
what about upload ?
most of us pirates get our media by using torrents, in Europe and north America piracy is illegal ( downloading copyrighted material without permission is a better term ) and it is punished by law some countries gives huge fines and other can even jail you for it ( like USA ) but it is not the government who is in the lookout for these people but “copyright trolls” an independent companies pied by the copyright owner to extract settlement money from people ( essentially they go to people saying :"you have infringed our copyright so if you don’t want us to sue you, you can give us i don’t know …50K $ to forgive you )
how they catch these people in the first place is by going to torrent trackers and logging IP address then figure out whose those IP address belong to,in some case they would go to the IP owners directly but mostly they go to the ISP and send them a letter saying “this IP address did a no no downloading our song that we want to go triple diamond💎💎💎” witch the ISP to avoid trouble forward it to you, and depending on the ISP they may do nothing afterward or ban your account after multiple infringements which if they are the only ISP in town sucks.
what VPNs do is that they mask your real IP address so they can’t know who you are to sue you and if the VPN have a no logs policy they wouldn’t know your real address even if they try to sue the VPN for it.
note that this does not apply to DLL (direct downloads from websites) as it does not count as evidence that you visited the website even if it hosts copyrighted material in most countries
i tried to explain this as simple as i could , also note that i omitted some details for the sake of simplicity
–>since everyone is confused about this i’m gonna try to explain as best as i could and also clearing some misconceptions:
1# why this is such a big deal ?
if this gets implemented AND it gets widely adopted websites now can refuse to give you content if you are running a non complied browser, remember those website that say “oh you are using an ad blocker so disable it to access our site” they can detect this by various methods but ultimately all of them rely on running a JavaScript into your browser. which you guessed it, its easy to modify and tamper with manually or using extensions
now what WEI-API does is that it can verify the integrity of the web page ( JavaScript/HTML/CSS has not been modified ) and even tell the website what extensions - ad blocker detected no content for you - you are using and what browser you are using - firefox or brave detected no content for you - and do not be fooled into thinking that this can be spoofed. and website owners who think that they are running a business not a charity will implement this.
2#will using firefox save me?
if this gets widely adopted and you inevitably encounter a website that require this ( for your job ,school or your bank ) you have no choice but to use chrome just like when your banking apps refuse to work because your phone is rooted which means that SAFETY-NET is broken
3#why this is a threat to begin with?
this is only viable if the web adopt it so why bother?, well guess what google is famous for making its services very easy to integrate and well documented just look on how easy it is to integrate google analytics and google adsense* into websites and how many of them use it in the internet.
4#what can we do to prevent this?
this is my personal opinion but i think we simply can’t, this not like the reddit incident were very large portion of the user base was upset most people don’t know/care/give-a-fuck about web technologies and how they work.
#and Finally “but google said they don’t plan to use this to fingerprint you (Device ID) or track your browser history or interfere with the work of extensions”
do you really believe that a company like google whose bread and butter is advertising would not make it easier for themselves, a company who has been exposed time and time again for lying and having ulterior motives ( you don’t need to look far just look into what manifest-v3 did )
ouch that would be painful
yep that’s basically it in a nut shell
They seized some of the domains here is the official statment.
