It was a legitimately nonprofit hospital and he probably was overpaid, but at least he was a practicing physician at one point and did seem to give a damn about his staff.

I once worked at a hospital in the ER where the department director was a union-busting bastard, but the CEO was pretty reasonable. After I left, one of the other ER techs went to the CEO about our pay being messed up and got everyone $5-6/hour raises to actual market rate. Also, there were a few weeks when we were really understaffed that the hospital encouraged admin folks to volunteer as “candystripers” in the ER to do stuff like help clean/turn over rooms, and answer patient call lights for water, blankets, etc. And the CEO was down in the ER for a couple hours every evening helping out most of that time period. It was encouraging to see the CEO of the hospital putting on some gloves and helping us with basic stuff like cleaning and stocking.

Taking an ambulance to the ER does not ensure that you will be seen faster. A decent chunk of ambulance patients go right out to the lobby to wait like everyone else because everyone is triaged based on their illness or injury, not their mode of transportation.

I’ve been in enough futile codes that I hope there isn’t any consciousness beyond the “lights out” point. Especially since most of the codes I participated in were in a pediatric hospital. It doesn’t matter that the brain shut off more than half an hour ago…you just have to keep doing compressions and pantomiming the code until the parents consent to calling it. I’ve seen it get dragged out an extra 45 minutes past where the physician would have called it because the mom didn’t want T.O.D. called until after the dad got to the hospital from work. It’s better with adults, but not by much. There’s only been a handful of times where caving in the sternum was actually worth the destruction involved.

I don’t think it’s something that should be shortened. It’s dehumanizing.

“A person affected by substance use disorder”. Or " people with addiction disorders". Addiction is an illness that people sometimes have, but it should never become a descriptor of who or what they are.

Yeah, I worked in pediatric emergency medicine for a while and it’s really not the fault of literal children that they get hurt by these kinds of things.

I plan on working in emergency medicine after med school, and I feel like I’m going to have to get a dummy/burner phone to put TikTok (or its future equivalent) on to keep up with what trends and memes will be coming through the ER.

It’s probably inadvisable. There’s enough possible bacterial or viral GI diseases that can get picked up that way that it’s just not worth the risk.

It’s a very different answer from the others here, but Psychonauts 2 is gorgeous. The animation is incredible and the visual design is totally unique.
