  • I’m sitting here trying to figure out why you’re coming out on the attack so hard, it’s your own blog. That makes perfect sense.

LLM? no, I skimmed it because it’s extremely long and very fluffy. I mistook some of the fluff, my apologies. I’ll go back and thoroughly read it when I have time later today and give you credible feedback. Off the cuff, I’d recommend you try to tame the writing down a little, you’re obviously very excited and feel strongly about the topic, but that doesn’t always translate to a good read for others.

  • Article claims the forums were expensive and difficult to maintain. I thing it more likely that Facebook groups are epopular because people are already there.

Discord has done an amazing job at convenience. It’s free, they have a rather generous API. The communities have created fantastic bots. But it’s important to remember discord isn’t a forum it’s a live chat. Two people having a live discussion is a very different thing than two people carefully curating their responses in a forum.

Reddit and Lemmy are curated knowledge repository wrapped in discourse. Which brings an advantage over old forums.

More or less I would argue that the article is missing convenience as a driving factor.

Edit: I poorly skimmed this article and mistook some of its points. This comment deserves no upvotes and I’ll circle back later and give some credible feedback.

  • Historically you don’t hear a lot about Baltimore’s mayor unless they’ve done something really awful. In the early 2000s we had some riots that broke out from police brutality (Freddy Grey), The mayor at the time said some very non-choice words and ended up becoming very unpopular very quickly. She was followed up by a mayor that was taking bribes, she was found complicit in businesses having to order a large quantities of her book to receive preferential treatment, ended up with a 3-year prison term. She was followed up by somebody who was okay but short-lived, The current guy that’s in there is relatively young, he just turned 40. He’s good for the city and he doesn’t tend to make controversial decisions, as long as you’re a Democrat I suppose.

Yes, those two whole downvotes really make me lose sleep.

I don’t really want to get into it because I can see from your replay that you won’t be arguing in good faith, but we’ll give it one go. If you start moving the goal posts, changing the subject or cherry picking I’ll just block you. Defend what you claim in whole or dispute what I say in whole with non-fallcy fact. If you want to argue, we can debate it, but I’m not going to have your cheesing it.

Everything I mentioned is an observation of what humanity does. It’s objective, there is sufficient documentation if it happening in court cases and search fodder. Most of your post is opinion about how you feel in your circumstances and poorly thought out enough that I felt it’s better written off than addressed, but let’s give it a shot.

“You’re treating the symptoms as the causes dude.” this is your opinion, you only offer more opinion to back it up. I disagree, cause and effect are sometimes hard to peel apart. You give a starving person bread. You don’t give a rapist access to women talking about sex. Giving a rapist free and open access to women isn’t going to cure him. (my opinion, free to debate)

“If people understood more” is an opinion and unfounded. Do you have proof for that? I disagree

"I go to many places where " fallacy, your experience isn’t everyone’s experience. Same goes for your communal showers. How many cases of gang rape and murder happen? Just because communal shows and bathrooms can exist in some places with some people, doesn’t mean that it’s good for everyone everywhere. (my opinion, free to debate)

"We are sexual creatures (except ace people), ain’t no two ways about it. " this does not support your statement that we should be more open sexually. Just because we replicate sexually does not mean society in whole can handle it. Evolution provided us reproduction, rape and misogyny, cultural enlightenment made those things bad and wrong. We are all enlightened equally and going back to the stone age to have more open sex isn’t going to improve that. We can return to it perhaps once we move along socially, but right now, it’s just a horror show waiting to happen.

“Keeping sex taboo does nothing to prevent the problems” then why separate pedo’s from children? We do it because it works, we do it because if we don’t bad things happen.

“It’s like the Islamic extremists who think the only way to protect women is by taking away their rights, making their beauty a taboo, etc. And still, these places have their own problems with rape anyway, so clearly that doesn’t work.” - you insinuate it can’t be worse without any proof that it makes it better. Because there is a theft in a neighborhood, one can’t say the police and laws are useless.

It’s a mental health problem to be sure and it needs to be handled in society

In my opinion, this is the answer, and just being more sexual is not going to do anything but get a lot of people hurt.

There are a non-insignificant number of people in society who can’t seem to handle the concept of consent. Then we have an ever growing number of incels awkward enough in relationships and socially that they can’t talk about sexual topics without becoming angry and violent.

A lot of our societal taboos about sexuality are trying to keep those people at bay.

It’s a mental health problem to be sure and it needs to be handled in society but it is rarely actually worked that way. It’s easier in some countries to make women hide away than it is too deal with the men that are out of control.

We really as a race can’t revel in our sexuality until we manage to get our morality under control.

  • There’s give and take. If they lay the ads right into the stream at random points with no indicators and if you’re due for an ad, they only serve you ad until you’ve consumed that time. So the apps turn to buffering. You pause the video for 10 seconds then you run it at 95% speed. At some point we’ll end up predownloading everything at 1x speed with ads and watching it later with an ad skip algo on the canned video.

They can’t stop you from stripping ads, but they can make it not work in realtime. You’ll have to have a plan on what to watch and lose some time when you’re discovering random content.

  • I was working for a big company, middle upper level technical position. One of my ex co-workers went to work for Disney. He hooked me up with an interview. They flew me in, rented me a car.

They brought me in to the interview. I sat around for about an hour and a half before they were ready. They came in and grilled me on uncommon proprietary Linux management packages. At the time I was managing a couple of 10,000 node clusters, had been running them for years. Of the four guys in the interview three of them just dismissed me. After the interview I headed out, wasn’t really mad but I was pretty disappointed the fourth guy pulled me aside and said I think they were being extremely unfair to you in there if you are really interested in trying to work your way in here reach out to me and I can advocate for you.

After the interview I farted around LA for a couple of hours and then flew home.

After some reflection I realized I really didn’t want to work with those other three guys. I never reached back out.

4 months later Disney dissolved that department.
