Hard to say. That study you linked mentions reductions in speed and crashes in the vicinity of the camera, which to me indicates that people are only slowing down because they know a camera is there. I suppose someone would have to do a study to see if speed cameras reduce speeds and crashes in areas where there aren’t currently cameras, but have been in the past. Meaning that people are slowing down in areas where they think there might be cameras.

I think the sentiment against them stems from the fact that there are ways to reduce speeds without feeling like they’re being used as a revenue stream.

Personally I like when there are warning signs saying “Speed camera in use ahead” since it has the effect of slowing down traffic and not feeling like a “gotcha” moment.

Back in the day, my stepdad worked overseas so we found ourselves at the airport quite often. Remember how they used to have those courtesy phones where you pick up, talk to an operator, and ask them to make an announcement in the airport to have someone pickup and connect you?

My brother and I would go to those phones and request that they page Reverend Maynard James Keenan. Then they’d announce over the intercom “Reverend Maynard James Keenan please pickup a white courtesy phone. Reverend Maynard James Keenan please pickup a white courtesy phone.” Then we’d lose our minds laughing. I don’t know why we thought it was so funny, but hopefully some other Tool fans at the time were walking through the airport and did a double take.

I was thinking about this movie yesterday in a thread talking about Beethoven. But I didn’t bring it up, because I figured it was too traumatic for most people.

Same! There’s a lot of stuff from my childhood that I remember being awesome, then going back to revisit it and being horrified. Like, I vaguely remembered the movie Gremlins being cute and funny when I was a kid. But reading the plot now makes me wonder how I survived childhood without PTSD.

I just looked it up and the selling puppies was the plot of the 2nd movie.
