Out of curiosity what are you using nextcloud for? Most people use it for public facing collab and sharing, and it’s an absolute beast to maintain because it’s so complicated.
Your nextcloud isn’t public facing?
I’ve really enjoyed Neon. It still has snaps, but everything going through the Discovery app makes installs of flat oaks or snaps seamless.
PopOS is great but threw me for a loop with its lack of GRUB.
I’ve tried everything. If you like a modern UI and simplicity, you want immich. The lead dev designs the app specifically so his wife is happy using it, and it shows.
I’ve been playing with Audiobookshelf and it does do books as well.
I think I saw an option in the application to turn logins off. I do believe what you want to do is possible.
There’s also partner sharing, which maintains independent logins but also shared photos (I’m not sure how it works).

Would paperless-ngx work?
I have never heard of running SMB through a reverse proxy, and I don’t think it’s a good idea. Just use a vpn to your network with a direct connection, or better yet deploy a nextcloud instance and use that.
Rustdesk works great, and it’s self hosted.
