This is the wrong crowd for that, mate. I’ve gone through this rodeo on Lemmy too many times and you’re just going to get dishonest people pretending that what they’re doing isn’t stealing. It’ll be everything from “preservation of games” to “it’s just like renting from a library” and all the extremes of dishonesty.

I’m pretty privileged to be in a good spot and even I can see the writing on the wall - everyone around me is sad, overwhelmed, stressed, and angry and they can’t find anything that opens the release valve. I don’t understand how all these selfish bastards can look around and think that the US is doing great.
That’s why the captivity is so desirable and why it’s only going to get worse. Desperate people don’t have the luxury of caring if the job they take is going to be fulfilling or happy. They need the money more than any empathy or principles they have. If people are sad, you replace them because there’s crowds of desperate people that also quit their last job because it made them unhappy and now all their bills are 10-15% higher than they were before.
Except you did. You’re literally on a discussion where you posted Dave Grohl because of something he was a part of for maybe 2 or 3 years that wasn’t even his idea to begin with while ignoring everything he’s done for 20+ years since.
And now you’re being dishonest about it.
No one is hand waving anything away. Nate is a member of the band. The message on the website was clear that it was his message.
You make it seem like people can’t change their views based on new information. It’s not like they could go back in time and not do those things after the fact. They’ve done far more in support of AIDS education. It’s not fair to vilify them for something they did for a few years while ignoring everything they’ve done since for more than 20 years.
To be fair, it wasn’t Dave’s idea or something he supported. It was bassist Nate Mendel’s message that they were, admittedly, amplifying. Even the info on their website had a disclaimer that listed it as “being displayed at the request of Nate Mendel”.
I think they all regret being involved in amplifying that message too, including Nate. In the 20 years since they initially broke support with the people involved, they’ve played several shows in support of HIV/AIDS awareness groups, fundraised for Elton John’s AIDS Foundation, and every tour they do now has some kind of fundraising or auctions to support AIDS education or LGBTQIA+ rights.
It feels like they know now, in hindsight of course, that it was harmful and have at least tried to do more good to make up for it. Mendel was even quoted saying that the only reason he did it was because he thought he was helping people, not hurting them.
I never made any assumptions about you. If you can’t even be bothered to read what I’ve written, there’s no point in responding to you.
It’s not unnecessarily restrictive. It was the entire point of discussion. Opening that up to more general straw men does nothing to further that discussion. Bristle all you want but I can see no other reason to ignore the point and argue against things that were never mentioned other than to be dishonest.
It’s ludicrous that people here can’t be honest with themselves. Piracy is theft, of one form or another. No, it’s not the same thing as stealing a physical object but no one is pretending it is. The gymnastics all over this sub are childish and tiring.
Those are dishonest comparisons. The OP was saying that rich people get more votes. None of those things you mentioned are a vote for content. They are votes for the mechanisms of the content and, guess what, people vote for them every time by buying them, rich or not. Nintendo selling the same title for a different system is something people do whether they’re rich or not. A rich person doesn’t buy multiple copies of a re-released game for a single Switch. A rent-to-own store doesn’t deal with movies or music or content, they deal with goods.
My last statement isn’t naive. It’s literally what capitalism is. Ingesting content is not a need. We’re not talking about Nestle buying up all the food companies. We’re talking about completely optional products.
Not necessarily. There would be no point to someone paying multiple times for content. Rich people do, however, get to overwhelmingly produce the content which is exactly why it’s most important to support creators and pay for their content. If you want to build a meritocracy within a capitalist society, your dollars are the most important means of change.
It’s response to a complaint. Vote with your dollar. Just as with voting in elections, you don’t get to complain when you’re not participating in any capacity that has an impact on the result.
Guess what? While you’re pirating the content you watch, the rest of the world that doesn’t know how to pirate is paying for Fast 45 and Transformers 27… Geee…I wonder why they keep making those movies and not the ones you like?
I kinda do this. I buy physical media for things I enjoy but still pirate for accessibility reasons. I only have one Blu-ray player (PS5), for example, but I’m not gonna shuffle it around the house to watch a movie I own on the other TVs. The same goes for games. I pay for the games I want but, if it’s an Ubisoft game or something with a secondary launcher other than Steam, I play the cracked versions because there is no benefit to those extra DRM systems to me as a player.
That means some of the movies/games I own are unopened but that’s more like a secondary benefit to me rather than my primary motivation.
