\1. Many retro games were made for CRT TVs at 480p. Updating the graphics stack modern TVs is valuable, even if nothing else is changed.

\2. All of my old consoles only have analog A/V outputs. And my TV only has one analog A/V input. The mess of adapter cables and swapping is annoying. I want the convenience of playing on a system that I already have plugged in.

\3. I don’t even still have some of the consoles that play my favorite classic games, and getting retro hardware is sometimes difficult. Especially things like N64 controllers with good joysticks.

Studios don’t need to do a full blown remake to solve these problems. But I’m also not going to say the Crash and Spyro remakes weren’t welcome. Nintendo’s Virtual Console emulators toe this line pretty well.

But studios should still put in effort to make these classic games more accessible to modern audiences, and if that means a remake, that’s fine with me.

(I’m mostly thinking about the GameCube/PS2 generation and earlier. I don’t see much value in remakes of the Wii/PS3 generation yet.)

If you’ve got a phone or laptop charger, then input voltage doesn’t often matter. They’ll work with either 120v or 230v.

And in general, you likely won’t be bringing non-charger electrical stuff with you when travelling.

So if you’re installing this in the US, it makes sense to just wire this with 120v. Peoples’ phone chargers will continue to work just fine.

Cheating is such a hard problem.

Like, this is what leads to invasive client-side anti-cheat. Which also happens to be one of the main blockers for OS portability.

But if you make it so that the server has to constantly validate the game state, you get terrible lag.

You really have to design your game well to deter cheaters. And you have to empower server moderators to ban cheaters. This sorta implies releasing the servers so that communities can run their own instances, because these studios don’t have the resources to handle moderation themselves.

The alternative to IPv6 is CGNAT.

CGNAT is really annoying for users, since the entire ISP looks like a single IP address. This can lead to situations where the entire ISP accidentally gets classified as a bot or otherwise blocked. It’s not too hard to find these kinds of stories from StarLink customers.

We are at the point where we are are legitimately out of IPv4 addresses. Household NAT isn’t enough and CGNAT has too many problems. IPv6 code was written ages ago and is very stable in all OSs these days.

It really is just these legacy middle boxes holding us back.

I would like to see some kind of “canonicalization” feature in Lemmy to support this, similar to CNAME in DNS.

For example, !android@lemmy.world recently merged into !android@lemdro.id, where lemdro.id is the canonical server.

So it would be awesome if !android@lemmy.world was entirely equivalent to !android@lemdro.id. But as it stands, the lemmy.world community had to lock and everyone had to individually migrate themselves.

Essentially, in a case like this, I just want to call it !android (or c/android) and not need to care about which server it is hosted on. But as it is currently, I always have to reference the canonical domain since it is different than the one my account is on.
