  • It’s generally a lot less pretentious, which might appear as a lack of “intelligent” comments. Most Lemmy users just don’t spend hours trying to write page long comments on obscure topics that nobody else here cares about.

Also, in the more specific communities, lots of things are taken for granted. Places with more users will more often have the “todays 10000” user, who just discovered something that is new to them and then decides to write about it in detail. Lemmy is more polite that way: Not reposting noob stuff on a daily basis for karma or whatever point system brings it up constantly on other sites.

  • I don’t ever use the start menu for anything. I can’t be bothered to look through that mess.

Instead I press the windows key and type the first few letters of whatever I need, unless it’s already stickied to the bar. It’s fewer key presses than clicking through the start menu. I suppose that still counts as opening the start menu, even if I don’t use the actual menu structure.

I also use the windows + arrow keys to toss windows around the multiple screens. It has a lot of other purposes, like creating extra desktops etc, which I admittedly never use.

It’s a useful button for sure, but it does get a little overwhelming when combined with shift ctrl or alt . I can’t possibly remember all the uses, but I have the most commonly used on muscle memory.

  • It’s always a resistor. Planned obsolescence is basically putting a too small resistor somewhere. The parts they make for repair shops are usually better, so if you do take the time to swap a print, you will have a better appliance afterwards for a fraction of the cost of a new shitty machine.

Soldering the specific resistor can be done too, but for anyone who doesn’t have a stock of resistors and soldering tools/skill it’s usually a easier and just as cheap to get new print if they’re available.

No. People who are older than that have a smallpox vaccination scar on the shoulde from the vaccines in 1958-1977.

The arm thing is just an urban myth and plays on confirmation bias. Almost everyone have a freckle there for no good reason.

However… Mexicans actually have a tuberculosis vaccination mark on the arm, but most other countries didn’t need to vaccinate against that.

That’s how these myths spread, part truth+loads of bullshit.

Never used it. Never missed it. Never lost touch.

Anything that ever happened on that site worthy of being called “being in touch” has always been and always will be reported elsewhere too if its actually worthwhile. I see more more of it than I want to anyway. Even this post.

You can quit it today and not miss out on anything.

  • Climate Change: they should clean up as they go. It ought to be part of the production cost.

Immigration: Why aren’t the laws enforced? The issue is that employers absolutely do hire unregistered immigrants, otherwise they wouldn’t come. Even Trump himself has Mar-a-Lago staffed with illegal immigrants. Either make them legal, or stop the employers from dumping the employment market with “they took our jobs”-employees. It’s the most hypocritical thing. It’s not complex at all. It’s just racist slavery.

  • Compromise doesn’t have to mean giving up on anything. It’s more often about finding a middle way solution on an issue that both sides can accept.

This is how I would suggest compromising on each issue without either part giving up on any:

Abortion: Religious people can give up all the rights they want.

Gun control: Ban guns in cities. Allow them in the wilderness.

Climate change: Allow industries to pollute as long as they pay for cleaning it up.

Immigration: The whole thing could be solved by not allowing employers to hire people without their paperwork in order.

Culture wars: The fear is that certain cultures get to control others? Don’t allow anyone to force their culture on others.

Trump gets president: Okay, if all power is removed from the position, then he can be the representative of the country. Not a good one but whatever.
