  • The first all hands meeting (within three days of being hired) I had at my new job was the CEO talking about legal allegations and indicating he’s going to be much less involved in the day-to-day. Apparently he was pretty well known for being a massive dick and berating employees.

On the bright side, I’ve not had to deal with him once! In the last year-plus I’ve seen him comment on two tickets regarding bugs, but that’s about it. We’ve not had a single all-hands since then. I just started at an unlucky time, haha

  • I don’t know how you’ve seen nobody in the world that has cut their fingers or their hand while using a knife. There are millions of people who use dull knives because they believe they’re safer. Just because you haven’t hurt yourself yet doesn’t mean you’re not introducing unnecessary risk. I’ve helped two or three people learn how to cook, and all of them have come millimeters from slicing the tips of their fingers off at one point or another by pressing down on a knife with their fingers curled under the tip. I keep my knives deadly sharp, so a slip is a lost finger. You may not even realize you’ve cut yourself. As long as you’re using them properly, they’re safer.

Sure, you may go a decade or two with unsafe knife practices and be totally fine. Survivorship bias is a hell of a drug, though.

I trust him to be competent in things he’s knowledgeable on, but for things he’s rarely done I’ll offer assistance if I know a bit more, and I expect the same from him. There’s zero shame in not knowing how to do something. I WANT to be corrected when I’m wrong or being unsafe. I don’t understand how anyone could want anything else.

  • I sleep every-which-way. Some days stock still on my back like the dead, other days on my front sprawled out, and other days on my side. I’ve got pretty broad shoulders and the purple pillow (the flat one, not the poofy one) and medium-firm mattress combo does wonders for me. On my side I sink just enough into the mattress to lay my head flat, and on my back/front works just the same. Not sure how well it would work for you, and Purple is a bit pricey, but I highly recommend them. Just make sure you try them out at one of their locations, first. The grid is easy to get used to (I got used to it in a few days, and now I never notice it), so try to ignore the texture, just go by overall feel
