Thanks, I was super confused for a bit!

Yes. Depends where you are but generally, huge advantages/consequences of not being the legal guardian in a bunch of areas, if that kids in trouble with the law or needs medical care and relies on you, you absolutely want to be a legal guardian.
There are also usually tax benefits (which you can spend together!) Though also, possibly legal responsibilities if they are a minor (though that seems to vary etc.)
Don’t have an answer but I’m genuinely surprised and impressed that the majority of responses aren’t people being snarky about religion and instead, just folks trying to help you out!
Good luck!
In that we murder a bunch of people, other folks weaponize the mob to murder specific people so as to take their stuff, eventually descending into a situation so bad that we appoint a successful general as a dictator?
Maybe?
I didn’t know people were allowed to research before commenting! /s
I love it! Really made browsing more enjoyable and I feel like it sort of rewards others for being interesting (in as much as a comment or reply from me could be considered a positive.)
Really well put.
I responded to a “why do Conservatives feel x” sort of of post as I have a few conservative friends and we’d talked about it.
Ended up in a multi day back and forth where I was accused of being everything from Hitler to sociopathic and had one person follow my comments around for a while afterwards.
And in the end? I feel no one was informed and none of it had any reward.
Ha, yeah exactly. That’s one of those where you can kinda guess how the comment section is going to go.
Never heard the term comment sniper but damn, I like it!
Ha, I have a similar process. I use Connect as my app which has a feature for user notes, so if I’ve tagged someone with a good note, I try to respond and vice versa.
About 20 years ago I spent the year after high school in Europe. Went backpacking to Italy with friends, one of whom was absurdly handsome, not all that bright and quite forward.
Well, in Rome we met a group of pretty girls who spoke no English but with sign language and a phrase book we figured they were visiting Rome as part of their high school graduation fun. Got a number and promised to meet them in Naples.
Fast forward, we arrive in the evening in Naples with no plan or place to stay hoping to connect with these girls.
We find a payphone, handsome fella grabs it and starts dialing. And then we hear:
“Uhhhh. Ci? Is… Uhhh. Shit. Is your daughter there? Your daughter? Hot daughter? Phone? Fuck. IS YOUR DAUGHTER THERE? I’m the guy from Rome? FUCK!”
My guess is it’s a combination of things. A lot of lemmy is driven by a few prolific posters, many of whom enjoy star trek. Combine that with a nerdy userbase (linux being the other big subject) and you get a lot of trek.
This is pretty much exactly the mindset I’m trying to avoid.
I’d note you could just as easily flip the 2016 classified documents business. A Conservative could plausibly argue that Liberals were willing to vote for someone being investigated for mishandling classified documents when it was their person, but once it was trump it became a serious voting issue. (I tend to disagree, I think trump’s were a lot worse but I can absolutely see the logic of their case.)
Ha, very fair. I think a good number of friends would say the same about me. I think they’re wrong ;)
RSS is a great idea, not sure why I haven’t done that. Maybe I’ll set one up this weekend!
Thanks!
Oh no, I wouldn’t recommend Fox or Newsmax or the ilk on anyone.
But I do like to understand what the best version of things I disagree with are. Wider perspectives are important but if I agree with all of them? I dunno, it feels intellectually lazy to me. That’s why I’m asking! I’d like to find something akin to what the National Review used to be.
Otherwise, to me at least, there’s a very real danger of becoming the kind of person who writes off everyone who disagrees with me as ignorant, bigoted or evil. Which, in my opinion, isn’t a great way to live. Though, admittedly, I’ve always found those “everything is black or white” folks to be insufferably boring so maybe I’m just trying to not be that person instead of any high minded ideal.
Sorry I’m tired and rambling while pooping.
Glad you liked it, It’s one of my favourites.
Sorry about the barrage of unfun comments. The internet is so wonderful and so goddamn annoying at the same time eh?
because it stresses me out pointing out how everything they think is wrong…
Honestly, that sounds fairly healthy. I have a weird obsession with being well informed and being able to articulate arguments from all sides (which has occasionally made me very unpopular both in real life and online) and while it’s a fine intellectual exercise, it’s probably not the most conducive to feeling great.
That sketch was my forst thought too.
