That is what is frustrating. He doesn’t really mean what you “see”. He means go with your gut/surface level feelings and understanding. If you “see” something that goes against what you see or what you feel without any specialized knowledge on the subject, go with your priors.

You need good software to make the most out of good hardware, but I think our definition of good is different. For software, as long as the software doesn’t get in the way of launching the app you want, most normies will consider that good. It doesn’t matter that Android is bloated and inefficient if the user can tap the Instagram or Facebook icon and have that open up without user perceptible delay.

The average person is remarkably able to put up with shit. Look at the experience on smart TVs for example. The vast majority of people are fine with the absolutely shitty experience as long as they can open up Netflix.

Use what you like. Just like Windows, macOS and Linux for the vast majority of people, all these OSes are, are platforms to display apps and webpages. They all have sanded off most of the rough edges meaning that unless you have specific niche needs/wants, you’ll just use what is familar and be happy.

Life is too short to have deep feelings about an OS.

Yeah, I can’t imagine what about Graphene would make that big of a difference. Smart phones and slabs of glass with apps on them. There’s very little that truly impacts the experience after you get past specs.

Have you ever self hosted a website? Was that a modern website, or just a bunch of text? Are you experienced with uptime SLAs on multiple services? Have you ever had to deal with a DDOS attack?

There are lots of things that Cloudflare does that requires experience and knowledge to notice or understand. And it isn’t even the biggest single point of failure when it comes to the Internet. When AWS has an outage for instance there is a huge chunk of the Internet that goes down.

There are problems with the centralization of the Internet. But this happened for a reason, and it has been so long and these services have been so reliable that people don’t even realize what it was like before.

Honestly, I don’t know how any end user who doesn’t understand IT and wasn’t around before services like Cloudflare were available can say this. They objectively don’t have the information or experience to make the claim.

Lightning was a good cable. It’s just that Apple didn’t improve it any for a decade and never opened it up so it could have been a standard.

It’s smaller and more durable. It’s just slow and proprietary.

Nowadays especially so. It’s like Android vs iOS. Both OSes are good and now so are Windows, Linux and macOS. Use whatever you prefer, just know how to use it so you don’t blow up non-issues.

It’s also an unimportant stat considering that any modern, well configured Windows machine should have reboot times of under a minute.

It literally feels like a blast from the past. I remember being on forums in the 90s and early 2000s hearing all this Linux evangelism. Then I say “the second a user has to touch a command line, they’re out” and everyone acts like this isn’t a reasonable take.

Thankfully though, Linux has evolved and ChromeOS and Android have shown how lower needs users and limited platforms like mobile can use Linux and not have to deal with the complexity of old-school Linux.

Probably not as bad, but it is an inevitability I think. Once you get a certain age, major shifts are just more difficult to adjust to. On a smaller scale for example, I don’t understand things like Tiktok, Snapchat, etc. I’m a millennial that will be hitting 37 this month, so my adjustment to social media ended with Instagram basically.

I can imagine, especially for a honeymoon.

I imagine it wouldn’t be profitable at all, but I would love services like flights, resturants, movies, etc that were adult only. Would be nice to just not have to deal with it.

It’s unavoidable and a part of life you just have to deal with though. You roll your eyes, you turn up the noise cancelling on your headphones and you deal with it. But at the same time, parents should do all they can to keep their kids quiet and well behaved and maybe consider whether flights before their child is even a toddler are the best idea.

I already cancelled my Disney+ subscription earlier in the year. I’m just letting it ride out. After that, I will either do the subscription hopping thing where I only sub when something I want is airing, or just add Marvel stuff to my piracy rotation.

The difference is that you need to subscribe to multiple services now to get everything you want, instead of just one.

If anything, that is low. Cable bills can get truly outrageous depending on what you add. You get an NFL or MLB subscription, a few premiums like HBO and you can have a $200/month cable bill.

This is the best way, but it doesn’t work in every scenario. At my last apartment, I was basically unable to get OTA channels. Too much of the sky was blocked, and I think radio interference from a nearby military base didn’t help.

In my current condo it works mostly well, but I do get some skipping and drops that can be annoying during a long game.

I’m sure it does for people who aren’t motivated.

But those same people don’t work in office either, they just walk around and bullshit all day.

I am way more productive at home than I am in office. Partly purposefully out of spite, and partly because my home work space is better in every way than my office environment. Quieter, more comfortable, better equipment, better internet, even better resilience because of my UPSes.

It is obviously. Just look at what Lemmy and Mastadon are. The whole concept of the fediverse is trying to get back to old school, smaller and less controlled services like message boards, IRC, etc.

Most younger, less tech savvy people don’t care about those principles. They just want a cool place with a bunch of people.

Hopefully the balance will shift a little bit to get more diversity and more users in general. In the last few days, stability issues and lack of content have lowered my engagement. It’s early days still though, so hopefully the people developing and hosting these sites keep plugging away and more people come to make it worthwhile.
