Man, I started answering you and realized I am also 40 and…yeah.

But, were I to go to a show, a CD? Nah. But a sticker or socks or something, certainly.

How so? My friend had six figures of debt in America, moved to Thailand.

He’s got a new life, new friends, a career job, and a roof over his head.

Nobody has come knocking.

I think this is likely a sort of Cutco Knives type thing (less the pre-buying of inventory). But at least in parts of Oregon they’ll hire people for cheap and give them lofty allures of commissions - which never really happen before the salesperson burns out and quits.

I only know this because my friend got sucked into it for a year before realizing nobody was buying or cared.

Not so much a verbal thing, but just the general first glance demeanor on a blind date or an internet date…tough to forget.

Also, growing up I was always told I’d never amount to anything spending so much time on computers and that I needed to do something with my life. Well, I made over $500k last year in software engineering consulting…so…yeah.

Turns out to be an insurance phone salesperson job 9/10.

I knew a guy in college who had to do this, he had a degenerative eye disease or something that no amount of glasses, hard contacts, or whatever could fix. It seemed like it royally sucked, but he always seemed in good spirits.

Except I vaguely recall he impaled his own leg on a sharp branch while jogging because he couldn’t see it. That would suck.

Almost any sandwich that wasn’t made at home.

I don’t know why but sandwiches from somewhere always seem to taste better to me than ones I make at home, even if I copy it exactly. I don’t know if it’s psychological or what, but I’m always at least 10% disappointed with my homemade sandwiches.

I could have fresh crunchy lettuce, fancy mustard, premium meats, sprinkles or celery salt, fresh onion, whatever - it still doesn’t match some sandwich I get out and about. I don’t get it.

I’m trying to retire early, so I usually work my 40hr day job and then do another 20 or so contracting / consulting.

I’ve looked into relocating there, but citizenship seems difficult?

I also think I read somewhere that there are stricter labor laws so I wouldn’t be able to freelance as heavily (~30 hours a week) alongside having full-time employment?

This is why I moved to rural Oregon, paid mid-5 figures for a one-off trenched fiber line, and still came out on top.

How is the tech pay there? Right now my jobs average between $120k to $200k base.

Seems like he’s doing pretty well, yeah. He spends most of his money on rental properties though and I don’t think he has tenants at all of them.

No sales tax in Oregon, but income taxes are rough. My friend moved across the river to Vancouver, WA and makes ~$50k more a year from tax savings.
