I know this has crossed the minds of more than a few people here over the past several days.
What would that event look like? A new platform that implements ActivityPub and attempts to federate somehow? A completely separate site (à la pxls.space) related only in spirit? Something in between?
Further, how do you think it would play out, given the difference in our userbase and Reddit’s?
Funny how all the “Fuck Spez” tiles have disappeared
Maybe I’m whoosh-ing your comment, but the link I provided is not the reddit’s place, but a non-reddit alternative
Thank you for the clarification.
I thought that reddit fanatic mods have overwritten things.
There have been a couple of these, though this one is new to me!
It always makes me sad that they never seem to gain much traction. It seems like disconnected from a larger platform (and potentially the exclusive time window?) they never draw many users.
How bout we forget Reddit and just enjoy Lemmy
I’m likely done with Reddit but /r/Place was a really fun thing to do the years it showed up. OP seems to be discussing it only in relation to Lemmy. I think we should welcome that. It’s a fun idea and would also drive activity to us.
A shitshow! /s
Just like r/place 😎
It should be not part of Lemmy’s server side code. Actually even integrating current image support is ill advised. It should have been an optional microservice.
I think it would be wildly different.
Maybe it would be a space where users can straight up post pictures and move them around in a large space. Not pixel by pixel, but a whole image at a time, in a space big enough to fit thousands of pictures.
Maybe it would be a collection of symbols and flags where users add a dot below what they identify with.
Maybe it would be a shared drawing canvas, where users can do freehand lines, outlines, and fill with colors like MS Paint, but all at once and over each other. Basically an internet graffiti wall. To align with the ideas of Lemmy, it would be possible to “wall off” off bits of the greater canvas, and block the rest of the users so that only one community/magazine /server can draw on that space, while any unclaimed area stays wide open for anyone.
Maybe it would not exist at all, because the whole mentality of the Fediverse might not support enough collective expression.
Sounds like a nightmare for mods.
Hmm, probably so. Another reason not to have a giant collective art project yet.
@Magiwarriorx@lemmy.world i think it’d be very intensive in terms of disk and network usage. Not only for the r/place-like host, but also for other Fediverse server admins.
Why would you write this to disk? RAM can easily hold a 1megapixel bmp
I imagine it’d largely consist of “fuck Spez” and warring German and French flags. A bit like r/place.
I think we are better off coming up with our own traditions and events, some will emerge organically and others will come about from spitballing like this.
A completely separate site (à la pxls.space) related only in spirit?
I think the more interesting option is a separate Fediverse service for some kind of collaborative art project that everyone using, for example, ActivityPub, could contribute to. Then people could then set up their own instances for different variations on the theme. Perhaps something like an online and infinite exquisite corpse?
Such event would be overrun by bots, just like /r/place.
I’m very curious how instances can have some unique features and personality.
I think something like r/place would start as something not federated, only for local users. What would it mean to federated it? If there was demand then federation would be added and instances could opt-in to the app.
I hope instances come up with these little widgets to make their place more unique. Right now every lemmy instance feels like all the others.
